Hi, I'm Joseph 史安泽
Learner. Educator. Advocate.
Joseph believes the key to sustainable development and a prosperous future for all is rooted in the ability of teachers, students, parents, and stakeholders of all backgrounds to effectively and ethically cooperate to solve the world’s most intransigent problems. Regardless if a child never leaves his or her hometown, they are already global citizens. To be a good global citizen, students, teachers, and school communities must understand that they are connected to others through their words and actions. The best outcome a school can have for their school community is to equip them with the necessary competencies, skills, mindsets, and dispositions to engage with others of diverse backgrounds based on mutual respect and a shared belief in the inherent value of human dignity.
Joseph previously served as a Senior Advisor for Whittle Learning Communities with Whittle School & Studios, a global start-up PK-12 school with campuses in New York City, Washington, DC, and Shenzhen where he worked with leadership, faculty, and staff from across the globe. In collaboration with the global education talent development team based in New York City, he oversaw the professional growth and evaluation system, curated professional learning opportunities, nurtured career pathways, and managed professional learning communities for the network’s Shenzhen campus.
Before joining Whittle, Joseph served as an Expert Advisor, School Inspector, and Foreign Vice Principal for Internationalization and Reform in the Nanshan Education Bureau, Shenzhen, China. He worked closely with local government officials, administrators, principals, and teachers to cultivate community and international partnerships, reform school inspection criteria, advance student-centered pedagogies, and develop interdisciplinary curricula. One of his signature projects has been facilitating a collaboration between the United Nations’ World’s Largest Lesson and the Shenzhen Municipal Government “Good Curriculum” development program to author a Chinese language textbook, Introduction to Global Literacies for Sustainable Development, to engage public school students in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
Before moving to Shenzhen, China, Joseph held numerous teaching and leadership roles including teaching AP Calculus and AP Economics in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, teaching gifted and talented students for the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, acting as a Summer Mentor Teacher for Teach for America, and serving as Grade Level Chair and Latin Teacher at an all-boys charter school in Philadelphia, PA.
Joseph is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. His thesis is a cross-case study analysis investigating how top performing public primary and secondary schools translate government policy into practice through a lens of organizational learning systems. Additionally, he holds an M.S. in Global and International Education, a B.A. in Economics, and has been awarded a fellowship from the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies for Sustainability (UNU-IAS) and the Network for Promotion of Sustainability in Post-Graduate Education Research (ProSPER.Net) in Melbourne, Australia in Leadership for Urban Sustainable Development.
Joseph and Maya are happily married and together have a handsome son, August Paul, a Siberian Husky, Dakota, and a rescue dog from China, Bear. Maya teachers middle school humanities at Shekou International School in Shenzhen, China. They love traveling, good food, and their family.
